Prestashop 1.6: version no longer maintained by Prestashop.

PrestaShop has discontinued version 1.6 as of June 30, 2019. This means there are no updates or security improvements, and no other improvements have been made. All new features have been added in version 1.7. To take advantage of this, you will need to switch your store to the new version. PrestaShop version 1.7 was released in November 2016. It is now faster, more stable and has more features than version 1.6. You should consider migrating your website to take advantage of all the new features. PrestaShop version 1.7.7 was released on December 2, 2020. It includes new and ever more powerful and functional features, as well as improved order management. This problem, we have been able to taste it recently. It is impossible to "easily" migrate the MySQL database of a Prestashop 1.6 store to the latest version of Prestashop. Prestashop 1.7 uses the Symfony framework. The changes are numerous, unfortunately also in the various fields of your database.

PrestaShop 1.6: here is why it has become a priority to consider migrating to the latest version of PrestaShop 1.7.

PrestaShop 1.7, a major update to the solution, has now been available in a stable version since the end of 2016. PrestaShop has redesigned its solution and now offers new technologies and a back office. The French open-source publisher, Symfony Framework, has greatly contributed to improving the performance and customization capabilities of its CMS. This is a significant technological change and therefore a new solution. Although PrestaShop 1.7 has been around for four years, it was the July 2019 version 1.7.6.0 that made PrestaShop truly revolutionary. All bugs and instabilities of the first versions have been fixed. PrestaShop also considered version 1.7 as mobile-first, with faster loading of mobile pages and good adaptation to SEO requirements, especially for Google. PrestaShop version 1.6 becomes obsolete and was replaced by version 1.6.1.24 in May 2019. PrestaShop 1.6 is not technologically up to date. This can lead to performance issues, incompatibilities, and most importantly, significant security risks for your e-commerce site.

Migration: The advantages of Prestashop 1.7.

First of all, let me remind you of the important improvements made by Prestashop. The purchase funnel is now done in a single step with a simplified appearance. This allows you to focus on the essentials and not disrupt the buying process. It also makes ordering easier and reduces cart abandonment. The page is easier to read and more fluid. The menu disappears and the cart details are still displayed in columns. The general conditions of sale and the payment are displayed at the same time as the payment. The payment method is to be selected from a list so that there is only one button to confirm payment. Version 1.7 of the tunnel, where all the steps are on one page The default theme is now the classic theme. It has been modernized to follow the latest web design trends and is responsive. The tabs are now grouped together. They are intuitive and logical, and enable faster product creation than the previous version. The generation of combination tabs has been simplified and reviewed. It's a time saving. A banner is located at the bottom of the browser and allows you to save and preview the product in frontoffice. You can now save the product sheet without having to reload the page.

Migration 1.6 to 1.6 of your data using modules

It is not possible to make the transition with the "public" or "One Click Upgrade" modules, as they only allow migration to PrestaShop 1.6. To upgrade your site from 1.7 to 1.7, you will need to purchase a paid module. Many people find it difficult to migrate to PrestaShop 1.7, even with a paid module. Many people make mistakes during the migration process. It is a delicate process that takes time and many technical checks. It is almost impossible to do it alone. It is better to contact a PrestaShop expert to perform the migration to version 1.7 without any problem for your e-commerce site. A PrestaShop expert will be able to check compatibility between all your modules and version 1.7. Not all modules are automatically compatible in PrestaShop 1.7. It is important to verify that they are working before performing the migration. Migration may be more difficult for those with custom modules or other developments. This could cause bugs on your site. You should take every precaution and ensure that your migration is done with the utmost care. It is essential to be accompanied by a PrestaShop expert when upgrading to version 1.7.1.

Is it possible to recover data from the 1.6 site?

PrestaShop 1.7, as we mentioned at the beginning of this article is based on a new technology. This is a complete new solution that requires a complete overhaul of your online store. Yes, all data can be recovered and transferred by upgrading to PrestaShop. This includes customers, items, photos, order history, text, descriptions, and order history. Do you have an XYConnect? It is not necessary to make changes. It will continue to work with the new version of PrestaShop. Web2007 will carry out the necessary tests to ensure its operation and its passage in production. Your graphic themes are the only ones that can be recovered. This is an opportunity to give your e-Commerce a facelift to reflect the modern needs and behaviors of Internet users.

Does the PrestaShop 1.6 to 1.7 update represent an investment?

It was difficult to switch from one version to another of PrestaShop. This new release is no exception. Migrating from Prestashop 1.6 to Prestashop1.7 is impossible. These modules can only be used to migrate Prestashop 1.6. You will need another paid module to migrate a merchant to Prestashop 1.7. Even with this module, it can be difficult to migrate to Prestashop. Even after several attempts, many errors may occur during the operation. This last module is the most problematic. As you know, Prestashop 1.7 migration is a tricky process that takes several days. Version 1.7 of PrestaShop was partly built on "homemade" and required considerable resources from the editor to maintain it. Symfony allows PrestaShop developers to rely on open-source software for maintenance and can focus on improving e-commerce experience by adding new features.

SEO optimization of Prestashop 1.7?

We worked with many customers during the migration of the Prestashop project from version 1.1.6 to version 1.1.7 to improve the natural referencing of the site. We identified the pages and content that needed to be optimized, and created a roadmap to get there. To be found by customers, we worked on the positioning of the site on their searches to improve the audience and the performance of the project. To observe the positive indexing of pages with the Google Search Console, we have noticed a steady increase in visibility on Google searches. Organic traffic increases and new customers place orders. We have also found that social media can be a great source of traffic for e-commerce projects. We analyzed performance and compared results. We also realized that social networks can be used to reference mobile devices, so we developed a mobile menu to make the entire catalog accessible from this medium. We have trained the teams, and set up quick accesses that allow us to quickly manage the links to the product collections.

Manual migration from Prestashop 1.6 to 1.7

Manual data migration can be done in several steps

Backing up current data

How to back up your files before migrating? Back up your files using FTP software. You can download a local copy from your Prestashop store. Depending on the hosting solution you have, you can also access the server management interface and then the file manager to create a backup of your store below version 1.6. How to back up your database? PHPMyAdmin can be used to back up your database either by adding a suffix or by exporting it locally. You can also backup your database from your Prestashop back-office by following this path: Advanced settings > DB Backup, Create backup.

Moving old files

We move your store's "current" files to a folder in the FTP client or file manager. Create a folder (we will call it "OLD" in Prestashop) and move all files to this folder.

Downloading new files

After downloading the files (1.7), you can upload them to the root of Prestashop through your FTP client. You should now have your new 1.7 store tree at the root. Also, your "OLD" folder, which contains your old store, should be visible if you followed the instructions.

Preparation of the development environment (DEV).

Unzip the ZIP file you downloaded. Open your favorite FTP transfer program, Filezilla is mine, and copy all the scripts to your server. It takes around 20,000 files, which takes a while. Never, ever use the pre-recorded versions offered by hosting companies. To access the database, go to your hosting company's back office and create a user. This information will be useful to you later. Start your installation by typing: your-site.com/install or subdomain.your-site.com/install. Follow the instructions to install the database. Write down the username and password. Click TEST to verify that the connection is working. WARNING: The table prefix is by default 'ps_. You can modify it according to your needs. You can change it to whatever you want, no more than 4 characters, and then add the _ (underscore). Wait for the installation to complete. Destroy the INSTALL folder located at the root of your website and launch Back-Office (BO). It will rename the ADMIN folder for you. Log in to your BO, then go to Configure -> Store Settings -> General Settings. To secure the connection between your server and your site, enable SSL on all sites.

Do not lose data during migration

The stakes are high, so you should not lose data during the migration. This is only possible if you migrate to version 1.7 of PrestaShop. This is a long process that will depend on the size of your database (number of customers and number of products), as well as the performance of your hosting. Even though PrestaShop 1.7 is extremely powerful, the performance of your host or server will affect your upgrade. It is possible to upgrade Prestashop 1.6 or 1.7 without causing any data loss. The size of your database is the most important factor in determining the time it takes to recover data. These include the number and products of customers, as well as the number and orders placed since the launch of the site. This information will be valuable to your partner in determining the data recovery time before the final update.

Migration with an external service

External migration services are available for companies that wish to outsource the entire 1.6 to 1 migration process. Keep in mind, however, that most migrations through an external provider do not include the transfer or functionality of your current site design. Cart2Cart can help you migrate your data from PrestaShop 1.5 to 1.7 via an external partner. It costs around $150. The process of migrating your data is now mostly automated. It will take about a few hours for the transfer to take effect.

First data migration.

Install the Migration Pro module in your DEV site. The small additional module in your PROD site will be installed. Launch a Prestashop update for all your data. Be sure to check: Delete data before migration to ensure that all demo data is deleted. This will take you some time, depending on the number of products, orders and customers, it can take several tens or even hundreds of minutes. Once the migration is complete, close the BO and connect to your server or FTP. Delete the PROD and DEV folders from the VAR/CACHE folder, then restart the BO. You will also need to resize your images to fit the new theme format. Go to Appearances->Images and at the bottom Regenerate Thumbnails. Format them one by one. It may crash as soon as your server timeout expires. For example, start with Products -> cart_default. Once that's done, switch to other formats.

Migration of the Prestashop design during the transition from 1.6 to 1.7.

You have two options when it comes to the design of your new website if you want to upgrade from version 1.6 (or earlier), to version 1.7. Option 1: Keep your existing design on PrestaShop. You can keep your design, but upgrade to version 1.7. However, there is no ready-made solution. Indeed, themes from previous versions of PrestaShop are not compatible with version 1.7. The theme architecture has evolved. Concretely, companies wishing to keep their design will have to recreate it on the new site, either through internal developers/integrators, or through a service provider such as Web2007. You want to know more ? Take a look at our PrestaShop upgrade offer. Option 2: Update your design to PrestaShop 1.7 There are many options if you want to modify your design, but keep your data. You can buy a new theme which is compatible with version 1.7. You can either buy a PrestaShop theme or hire a developer to customize it. Graphic designers can be hired to create layouts. You will need to hire a graphic designer to create the templates before you or an external vendor can integrate them.

At the end of the migration from Prestashop 1.6 to 1.7, you have to do the Big Check.

This is a mandatory step. You must confirm that you have: The products with their variations. These are the categories Taxes, Addresses and customers, Credit notes and orders, Carts, Carriers, Discounts, CMS pages, General settings, Advanced settings. Browse the pages of your Prestashop store. Drop down the command tunnel, search, sort, filter and click everywhere to make sure nothing is missing. Ask your friends to test it. You may have missed something if you are too focused on the details. To simplify this big control, you can switch from the DEV store to the PROD store. You can continue with the payment options. This is a delicate area that must be handled with precision. First, login to Prestashop Checkout and link it to Paypal. This should take less than 10 minutes if you haven't forgotten your passwords for the PROD site. If you use it, fill in the payment information to make transfers or check payments. Contact your bank or external service provider if you have a payment system such as Strype, Payzen, etc. to get the latest version. It's easy to install, to set up like on the PROD Store and to check that it works. We can then move on to the modules.

Migration of modules those present at 1.6, and check + migrate to 1.7.

The modules are not compatible with PrestaShop 1.6 and PrestaShop 1.7.1. This does not mean that you have to buy back all the modules you own. Two scenarios are possible from this point: Scenario 1 - You bought the modules yourself If you bought your modules from Addons.Prestashop and you have access to Addons.Prestashop, your modules can be redownloaded for free provided that they are available for version 1.7.1. Scenario 2 - You have not purchased the modules. If you have not purchased the modules, you will not have access to Addons. Prestashop has bad news: you will have to buy the modules you need and sort through the existing modules. It does not matter whether you have purchased the modules or not, you will have to reconfigure (or have reconfigured) your modules one by one on your new version of Prestashop.

Migration of your theme 1.6 to 1.7 of Prestashop.

There is no one way to configure a theme. Each theme is unique and has its own requirements. The most important pages of the theme are: The home page The category pages The product pages. Blogs and CMS pages (except legal pages) are less popular. I can only recommend a theme builder for theme selection. Creative Elements is the same company that developed Elementor for WordPress. A builder has the advantage of allowing you to make changes to your theme as often as you want, while staying true to current themes. You can also use the same page builders if you want to link your WordPress blog to your store. CMS pages are usually transferred. Now is the time to make sure they are all in place.

Migration of custom developments 1.6 to 1.7

As you might have guessed, there is no way to automatically migrate custom developments from one version of PrestaShop to another. There are two possible scenarios on this subject: Scenario 1: You want to migrate an application which is based on a Web2007 module, a supplier such as a developer, will have to adapt your development to PrestaShop. Depending on the case, the redevelopment may include all or part of it. Scenario 2 - You want to migrate a particular development of the module Depending on the case, and similarly to the developments affecting a particular module, you may need to redevelop all or part of your functionality in order to adapt it to PrestaShop 1.7.

Production (PROD) of your Prestashop 1.7.

Make a full backup of Prestashop 1.6 by putting it in Maintenance. If your host didn't make a backup overnight, chances are that backup will be restored. All files from your 1.6 should be deleted and replaced with those from your 1.7. You will save time if you are able to perform all these manipulations on a single server. You can copy the files through your server's BO. Normal time is 4-6 hours. On the same server, it takes 10 minutes. It's the same for the database. If you are on the same server, you don't need to touch anything. On the other hand, if your server is changed, you will have to modify PARAMETER.PHP, which is under APP/CONFIG, and enter your parameters. Delete the PROD and DEV folders located under VAR/CACHE To give Prestashop the correct URL, you will need to touch the DB.
